I guess I'm the 31 year old never had a problem so far nutt. I used to drink out of a garden hose, used sacrin and ate bacon. My grandfather who immagrated from Italy was covered in DDT before he could enter the U.S. he smokes and is currently restoring an old studebaker at 87...We're all nutty out here. I would suggest enjoying life without all the worry because we all die sooner or latter.

Wow, you really trust the FDA! I'm guessing you're one of those believe-what-anyone-tells you nuts, aren't you or maybe a don't-look-into-anything-yourself nuts?? Not sure which... If you would use some common sense, you would realize that any paper that appears white has been bleached using chlorine, it's a fact. There are companies that sell chlorine free diapers for this very reason or there's cloth. Using chlorine gas to bleach also produces a toxin called dioxin, a known carcinogen.

You don't need miracle grow to do container gardening. And using diapers on something that you eat is outrageous...they contain chlorine, let alone numberous other chemicals that will leach into your food. Using normal organic methods can produce a lot of things in containers without the use of all these detrimental chemicals.

this is not such a smart idea WHY? do you know from which material are letters made of? from lead! and lead is not good for any living creature. It is not smart to contaminate your plants if you are going to use them later as food font do this! If that is going to be inedible then ok but higher levels of lead can damage a plant :)

Doesn't look like a well designed garden - Raised beds should be small enough to walk around rather than stand in. Up to 4 foot wide is a good, allowing for all gardening tasks to be performed from outside the raised bed. One of the benefits of a proper raised bed - you will not compact the soil.

Well indirectly thats what you might do . if the stuff gets into the ground water it may well get absorbed by your garden plants anyway. and if it gets into the river it could get into your mains water and from there via your sprinkler onto your plants or worse still into your coffee. Wouldn't it make more sense to preserve the shingles with something less toxic?

FYI... if you live in Zone 10 like me, where you don't really get frost, you need to be careful about planting your tomatoes when it's too hot. I've heard that the plants do not fruit as well once the temperature is above a sustained 85ish degrees.

Whatever vegetables you like to eat I guess. Some grow easier than others, especially in different climates. Around here melons grow like weeds (I had accidentally grew a patch of watermelons by spitting seeds off my pool deck one summer) , but they probably wouldn't up North. Check online to find out what "zone" your in, and any gardening website should give more detailed help.

All you should do is determine what area you want to be garden, make a barrier around it, dig 10 inches in the area, take out the weeds grass, poor any soil (i use organic) then put your plants down in a organize pattern with reasonable space. i have tried a couple of compost bins. To be honest i have gotten the best results just making a pile and leaving it, turning it every couple of weeks. Two drawbacks in my opinion of bins is air circulation and creating a barrier for insects to enter. i had a black compost bin which from what i read was a popular model. The contents never got hot. This baffled me for a long time then i decided to just make a pile in a sunny area. after a good rain it gets piping hot.

Hi guys! Hey, I'm going to sound motherly here but, make sure she wears some shoes next time she tills the garden. I've also started my garden stuff...planted heirloom banana pepper seeds indoors last Sunday. Today I've plotted where veggies will go in my garden trying to use the rotation method on some notebook paper. It's a great way to see next year where things should go. Still have over 20 quarts of canned carrots, 15 or so canned tomato sauce, assorted canned fruits and veggies!!

@bigtintheheat - you need room between the plants for the potatoes to grow. Also, if we have any left over from planting, I'll go back in between and plant the extra a little more dense. 2 years ago I had them planted about 2 feet apart, and it worked out well

I watch and can't stop thinking like "those good for nuttin' city folks.. causin all the trouble *spit* " 1) Buy a plow and get a small tracktor/ something with horsepower. 2)Plow that shit 3)Till that shit 4)Plant three times denser than you just did. Fertiliser is good. But if you want it to be healthy and you wanna grow IN BULK to feed an entire community, then manure is your best bet.

Actually, REM's best years were the years with IRS records. They had greater commercial success when they went to Warner Bros., but there's something about those first 5 records that is incredible. They also went astray after the fired Jefferson Holt. They always referred to him as their 5th member. I think the music went in a different direction when he was no longer in the picture.

It's really nice to grow like this, but dam it's expensive. I have 8 beds now, 10'x4'. Each cost me about $1000au ($800us) to build and fill. So there is $8000au before i even grew 1 plant.... I had to ask myself how many organic vegies could i buy for $8000? Shit loads... It will take me 127 years of growing to just break even on the investment... Am i nuts????

Ok heres the deal dont buy these small bottles just order the gallon size from the company. also you can actually spray it on the wood or even use a paintbrush. Spraying on the wood is easier just mix with equal parts mineral oil.. so 1 gallon citrus and 1 gallon mineral oil. That should do several beds. ie you only need to spray a small amount on the wood then rub in with cloth.

You've done it again. Mel and you are quite a team. Last frost date is important because it's needed to determine when to start a seed indoors. Add 6-8 weeks to the germination time of the seed and then determine when the plant can be planted. (# of weeks before or after frost date) Then get a calendar and count back from those dates. It's easy and fun.......try some!
